He clenched and unclenched his fists, the tension in his body visible in the rigid set of his shoulders and the hard line of his jaw. Every so often, his gaze darted toward the ceiling as if he could will the sounds of labor from above to stop, though he knew better.
The low growls of Rocky and Ally followed him as he moved, their eyes fixed on his every step. Even Lyssa, normally aloof, watched him with wary eyes from her perch atop the kitchen table. They had grown used to his restlessness over the last few hours, but this moment was different. Ezra was different. There was a storm brewing inside him, and every one of his animals seemed to sense it.
His hand reached up to rub the back of his neck, trying to ease the knot that had formed there. Nadine’s shouts grew louder, piercing the air and making his heart clench with every cry. He stopped dead in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat. For a moment, he stood there, rooted to the spot, every fiber of his being wanting to rush upstairs to her, but a deep-seated fear held him back.
Giles, who had been quietly standing near the doorway, his infant daughter Maya cradled in his arms, stepped forward. The sight of his friend brought Ezra back to the present, grounding him in the moment. Giles had been a constant presence throughout this night, offering quiet support that Ezra hadn’t realized he needed until now.
“Ezra, you can’t go up there just yet,” Giles said, his voice calm and steady, though there was an underlying firmness in his tone. He rocked Maya gently, her soft coos a stark contrast to the tense atmosphere. “Esmerelda and the midwife are with her. They’ll let us know when it’s time.”
Ezra shook his head, the turmoil in his chest nearly overwhelming him. “I can’t just stand here and do nothing, Giles. She’s—” His voice broke, and he turned away, running a hand through his hair. “She’s in so much pain.”
Giles placed a hand on Ezra’s shoulder, stopping his restless movements. “I know it’s hard, but Nadine is strong. She’ll get through this, and so will you.”
Ezra looked down at the small face of Maya, her tiny hand grasping her father’s shirt, oblivious to the worries of the world around her. It brought a brief moment of calm to the storm raging inside him. He swallowed hard, his eyes glancing back up toward the ceiling. “I just want them both to be alright,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Before Giles could respond, the door to the kitchen creaked open, and Sheriff Sawyer stepped inside, his hat in hand. “Is the baby here yet?” he asked, his usual stern demeanor softened by the late hour and the concern etched on his face.
Ezra shook his head, a mixture of frustration and anxiety clear in his expression. “Not yet,” he managed to say, the words coming out in a rush. “She’s been in labor for hours, and I don’t know how much longer—”
A sudden silence from upstairs cut through Ezra’s sentence, freezing him in place. His heart dropped to his stomach, his breath catching in his throat. The absence of Nadine’s cries was terrifying. Had something gone wrong? He looked at Giles, panic evident in his eyes, but before either man could react, the kitchen door opened again, and Esmerelda appeared.
She stood there, breathless, her hair slightly disheveled, but her eyes were bright, and the smile on her face was unmistakable. She nodded once, and that was all Ezra needed.
Without another word, he rushed past her and up the stairs, his heart pounding with a new sense of urgency. His boots echoed in the narrow hallway as he reached the door to their bedroom and flung it open.
Inside, the room was warm and peaceful, a stark contrast to the turmoil in his heart. The midwife was quietly cleaning up, but it was Nadine who held his attention. She was sitting up in bed, her face pale and exhausted, but her eyes sparkled with a mixture of joy and relief. In her arms, wrapped in a soft blanket, was the tiniest bundle Ezra had ever seen.
He took a hesitant step forward, his breath catching in his throat as he stared at his wife and their child.
“Ezra,” Nadine whispered, her voice filled with love and exhaustion, “come meet your son.”
The world around him seemed to fade away as he moved closer, his hands trembling as he reached out to take the small, warm bundle from Nadine. The weight of his son in his arms, the delicate rise and fall of the baby’s chest, was enough to bring tears to his eyes.
“I didn’t think… I didn’t think I could ever be this happy,” Ezra murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “I never thought I’d be this lucky.”
Nadine smiled up at him, her hand reaching out to touch his cheek. “There may be one more thing that could make you even happier,” she said softly. “How about we name him Otto?”
Ezra’s breath hitched, his heart swelling with a profound sense of love and gratitude. “Otto,” he repeated, the name a whisper of reverence. He looked down at his son, his voice full of conviction. “Yes, Otto it is.”
Ezra sat at the edge of the bed, still cradling his newborn son in his arms, unable to take his eyes off the tiny face nestled in the folds of the blanket. The baby’s soft breaths were a calming rhythm, each one a reminder of the miracle that had just entered his life. His heart was full, nearly overflowing with emotions he had never allowed himself to believe he could feel. Joy, love, gratitude—they all mixed together, creating a warmth that spread through his entire being.
Nadine leaned against the pillows, her exhaustion evident but overshadowed by the tender smile that graced her lips. She watched Ezra with their son, a soft laugh escaping her as she noticed the awe in her husband’s eyes.
“Do you know,” Nadine began, her voice a gentle whisper, “I think he has your nose.”
Ezra looked up from the baby, his eyes meeting Nadine’s. There was a playful glint in her expression, one that made his heart swell even more. “You think so?” he asked, his voice filled with wonder. He looked back down at the baby, trying to see the resemblance she mentioned. “He’s so small… I can hardly believe he’s ours.”
Nadine nodded, reaching out to gently touch the baby’s tiny hand. “He’s ours, Ezra. We did this… together.”
Ezra felt a lump rise in his throat as he looked from his son back to Nadine. “I’ve spent so much of my life thinking I’d be alone,” he admitted, his voice thick with emotion. “After Otto… I never thought I could have this. A family, a home, someone to love.” He shook his head, as if still trying to comprehend the reality before him. “But now, looking at you… at him… I can’t imagine my life any other way.”
Nadine smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek as she squeezed his hand. “You’ve given me everything I could ever want, Ezra. You’ve given me a life I never dreamed possible, and now, with Otto… I feel complete.”
Ezra leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. “I’m the one who’s complete, Nadine. You saved me from a life of loneliness. You brought me back to life.”
A soft knock on the door interrupted the moment, and Ezra turned to see Giles standing in the doorway, a proud smile on his face. “Well, aren’t you going to let us meet the little one?” he asked, stepping inside with Maya still cradled in his arms. Sheriff Sawyer followed close behind, his usual stoic demeanor softened by the smile that tugged at the corners of his lips.
Ezra chuckled, carefully rising from the bed with Otto still in his arms. “Come on in,” he said, his voice a mix of pride and excitement. “Meet my son… Otto.”
Giles and Sheriff Sawyer exchanged glances, both of them visibly moved by the name. Giles was the first to step forward, gently adjusting Maya in his arms so he could peer down at the newborn. “Otto,” he repeated, nodding approvingly. “It’s a good name. Strong, just like his father.”
Sheriff Sawyer stepped closer, his gaze lingering on the tiny bundle in Ezra’s arms. “Otto would be proud, Ezra. You’ve honored him in the best way possible.”
Ezra nodded, a lump forming in his throat once more. He knew these men, his friends, understood the depth of the moment. They had been with him through his darkest times, and now they were here to share in his greatest joy.
Giles grinned, shifting Maya so she could get a closer look. “Looks like we’ve got another rancher in the making,” he said with a chuckle. “Think they’ll be good friends, Ezra?”
Ezra smiled, imagining a future where his son and Giles’s daughter grew up side by side, just as he and Giles had done. “I hope so,” he replied, his voice filled with warmth. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.”
Nadine, watching the exchange from the bed, felt a sense of contentment settle over her. This was the life she had always dreamed of—a life filled with love, family, and friendship. As she looked around the room at the people who had become her family, she knew that this was just the beginning of their story.
Ezra handed Otto to Giles for a moment, needing to stretch his arms and feeling a strange mix of pride and anxiety as his son left his hands. Giles took the baby with the practiced ease of a new father, cooing softly to Otto, who responded with a tiny yawn. Sheriff Sawyer watched, his expression softening as he observed the tender moment between friends.
“Looks like you’re a natural, Ezra,” Sheriff Sawyer remarked, his voice full of admiration.
Ezra let out a shaky laugh, running a hand through his hair. “I’m not sure about that,” he said honestly. “But I’ll do my best, for him and for Nadine.”
“You’re already doing just fine,” Giles assured him, passing Otto back to his father. “Being a father isn’t about knowing everything from the start. It’s about learning as you go and loving them with all your heart.”
Ezra took his son back into his arms, the weight of the tiny body grounding him in a way nothing else could. “That,” he said softly, looking at his son and then at Nadine, “I can do.”
Nadine beamed at him, her heart swelling with love for the man she had chosen to spend her life with. “I always knew you would be a wonderful father, Ezra. Otto is lucky to have you.”
Ezra looked down at his son, feeling the truth of her words deep in his soul. As he cradled Otto close, he knew that this was only the beginning of a new chapter in their lives—one filled with hope, joy, and the promise of a future brighter than he had ever imagined.
As the hours passed, the sun began to rise, casting a golden glow through the curtains of the bedroom. The warmth of the morning light filled the room, adding to the already palpable sense of peace and contentment. Ezra stood by the window, holding Otto close to his chest as he watched the sunrise. The weight of his son against his heart, the steady rhythm of the baby’s breathing, filled him with a sense of purpose he had never known before.
Behind him, Nadine shifted in the bed, her movements slow and careful as she tried to get more comfortable. Ezra turned, his eyes filled with concern as he watched her. Despite her exhaustion, there was a serene smile on her face as she looked at him and their child.
“You should rest, Nadine,” Ezra said gently, his voice laced with tenderness. “You’ve been through so much.”
Nadine shook her head, though her eyes were heavy with sleep. “I can’t stop looking at him,” she admitted, her voice soft and full of wonder. “He’s perfect, Ezra. I can’t believe he’s ours.”
Ezra’s heart swelled with love as he walked back to the bed, sitting down beside her. He carefully handed Otto back to her, watching as she cradled their son against her chest. “He is perfect,” Ezra agreed, his voice filled with awe. “Just like his mother.”
Nadine looked up at him, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “I never thought I’d have this,” she confessed, her voice trembling slightly. “A family, a home… a love like this. It feels like a dream.”
Ezra reached out, gently cupping her cheek in his hand. “It’s real, Nadine,” he said, his voice firm but gentle. “You and Otto… you’re my everything. I’m never going to let anything come between us.”
She leaned into his touch, closing her eyes as a single tear slipped down her cheek. “I know, Ezra. And I’ll spend the rest of my life making sure you know how much I love you.”
The room fell into a comfortable silence, the only sounds being the soft coos from Otto and the occasional rustling of the sheets as Nadine adjusted her hold on him. The weight of the night’s events was slowly lifting, replaced by a deep sense of peace that settled over them like a warm blanket.
A light knock on the door broke the quiet moment, and Esmerelda poked her head in, her eyes bright with excitement. “I thought you two might be hungry,” she said with a grin, holding up a tray laden with food. “And I think there’s someone else who wants to meet the newest member of the Wolfe family.”
Ezra and Nadine exchanged a glance, both smiling as they heard the familiar sound of Rocky’s tail thumping against the door. Esmerelda stepped aside, allowing the dogs to rush into the room, their excitement evident as they circled the bed, sniffing curiously at the new addition.
Rocky, ever the protector, nudged Nadine’s hand with his nose, his eyes fixed on the small bundle in her arms. Nadine laughed softly, reaching out to scratch behind his ears. “Don’t worry, Rocky,” she said soothingly. “This is Otto, and he’s going to need you to watch over him, just like you’ve watched over us.”
Ally, not one to be left out, jumped onto the bed and settled down beside Nadine, her head resting on Nadine’s leg as she peered at the baby. Lyssa, more cautious, crept closer, her tail twitching as she sniffed the air around Otto.
Ezra chuckled, watching the scene unfold with a heart full of love. “Looks like Otto’s already got himself a pack,” he said, his voice warm with affection.
Nadine looked up at him, her smile radiant. “Our family,” she whispered, her eyes shining with happiness. “It’s everything I ever dreamed of, Ezra.”
Esmerelda placed the tray of food on the bedside table, her smile softening as she watched the couple with their son. “You two make a beautiful family,” she said quietly. “Otto is lucky to have you both.”
Ezra nodded, his heart swelling with pride and love. “We’re the lucky ones,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “He’s everything we could have ever hoped for.”
Esmerelda excused herself, leaving the small family to enjoy their first morning together. The room was filled with a sense of quiet contentment as they shared a simple meal, taking turns holding Otto and marveling at the tiny life they had created.
As the morning wore on, the reality of their new life began to settle in. Ezra found himself thinking of the future, of the many moments yet to come—Otto’s first steps, his first words, the day he would teach his son how to ride a horse, how to work the land that had been in their family for generations.
Nadine seemed to sense his thoughts, for she looked up at him with a knowing smile. “What are you thinking about?” she asked, her voice gentle.
Ezra smiled, reaching out to take her hand. “I’m thinking about all the things we’ll get to do together,” he replied, his voice filled with quiet joy. “All the memories we’ll make as a family.”
Nadine squeezed his hand, her heart swelling with love for the man beside her. “It’s going to be a beautiful life, Ezra,” she said softly. “For all of us.”
Ezra looked down at his son, who was now peacefully asleep in Nadine’s arms. “Yes,” he agreed, his voice full of promise. “A beautiful life, indeed.”
The days that followed were a whirlwind of new experiences and emotions for Ezra and Nadine. Each moment brought with it a new challenge, a new joy, and the unshakeable realization that their lives had changed forever. The ranch, once a place filled with solitude and echoes of the past, now buzzed with life and laughter. It was as if Otto’s arrival had breathed new life into the very land they worked so hard to maintain.
Ezra found himself waking early, even earlier than he used to, eager to start the day with his family. He would often slip out of bed quietly, leaving Nadine and Otto to sleep a little longer while he prepared breakfast or tended to the animals. The ranch was a peaceful place in the early morning, the soft light of dawn casting long shadows over the fields, and Ezra relished the quiet moments before the day’s work began.
One morning, as he was finishing up the chores, he heard the familiar sound of footsteps behind him. Turning, he saw Nadine standing at the edge of the barn, Otto cradled against her chest in a sling. She was still in her nightgown, her hair loose around her shoulders, and she looked as radiant as the morning sun.
“Good morning,” she called out, her voice carrying a lightness that made Ezra’s heart skip a beat. “I thought I’d come see what you were up to.”
Ezra wiped his hands on his trousers and walked over to them, a smile spreading across his face. “You should be resting,” he chided gently, though the warmth in his voice betrayed his pleasure at seeing them.
Nadine shook her head, her eyes twinkling with mischief. “I’ve rested enough,” she replied, leaning into his embrace as he wrapped an arm around her. “Besides, Otto and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Isn’t that right, little one?”
Otto stirred in his sling, his tiny hand reaching out and grasping at the fabric of Ezra’s shirt. Ezra looked down at his son, his heart swelling with pride and love. “Well, I suppose it’s never too early to start teaching him about the ranch,” he said with a chuckle, running a gentle finger along Otto’s cheek.
Nadine rested her head against his shoulder, sighing contentedly as they stood together, looking out over the land. “I never thought I could be this happy,” she murmured, her voice filled with wonder. “Every day with you, with Otto… it feels like a dream.”
Ezra kissed the top of her head, his heart full to bursting. “It’s real, Nadine,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “And it’s only going to get better.”
They stood there for a long time, soaking in the peaceful morning, the promise of a new day stretching out before them. Ezra felt a deep sense of contentment settle over him, a feeling that he knew would stay with him for the rest of his life.
As the sun climbed higher in the sky, they made their way back to the house, the scent of freshly baked bread wafting from the kitchen where Esmerelda was already hard at work. The sound of laughter echoed through the air as Giles chased Maya around the yard, the little girl’s delighted squeals filling the morning with joy.
“Life has a way of surprising you, doesn’t it?” Giles said as he scooped Maya up in his arms, his eyes meeting Ezra’s with a knowing smile. “A year ago, we were two lonely men trying to figure out how to make a living out here, and now… look at us.”
Ezra nodded, his gaze drifting to Nadine, who was already deep in conversation with Esmerelda. “I never thought I’d have this,” he admitted, his voice quiet. “A family, a home filled with love… I thought it was something other men had, but not me.”
Giles clapped him on the shoulder, his grin widening. “Well, you’ve got it now, Ezra. And you deserve every bit of it.”
Ezra smiled, feeling the weight of Giles’s words settle in his chest. “I think I finally believe that,” he said softly, the realization bringing with it a deep sense of peace.
The rest of the day passed in a blur of activity, the ranch bustling with the daily routines that kept it running smoothly. But there was a new energy in the air, a lightness that seemed to infuse every task with a sense of purpose. The animals, the land, the people—they were all connected, woven together by the threads of love and commitment that Ezra and Nadine had worked so hard to create.
As evening fell, Ezra and Nadine found themselves sitting on the front porch, Otto asleep in his mother’s arms. The sky was painted in hues of pink and orange, the last light of the day casting a warm glow over the ranch. The sounds of the night—crickets chirping, the distant lowing of cattle—created a soothing backdrop to the quiet conversation between husband and wife.
“I’ve been thinking,” Nadine said softly, her voice breaking the comfortable silence. “About how much has changed in the past year.”
Ezra looked at her, his brow furrowing slightly in concern. “What do you mean?” he asked, his voice gentle.
Nadine smiled, her gaze drifting down to the sleeping baby in her arms. “I mean… look at us. A year ago, we were strangers, trying to navigate this new life together. And now… we’re a family. A real family.”
Ezra reached out, taking her hand in his and squeezing it gently. “We are,” he agreed, his voice full of emotion. “And I wouldn’t change a single thing.”
Nadine looked up at him, her eyes shining with love. “Neither would I,” she whispered, leaning in to kiss him softly.
As they sat there, wrapped in the warmth of the evening and the love they shared, Ezra knew that this was the life he had always wanted. The life he had fought so hard to build. And now that he had it, he would do everything in his power to protect it, to nurture it, and to ensure that the love he and Nadine shared would only grow stronger with each passing day.
For the first time in a long time, Ezra Wolfe felt truly at peace. The future stretched out before him, filled with endless possibilities, and he knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together. As a family.
And with that thought, he leaned back in his chair, his heart full, his soul content, knowing that the best days of their lives were still to come.
Hello, my dears! I truly hope you enjoyed our couple’s happily ever after! I would love to know which was your favorite part of Nadine and Azra’s story! Please share your thoughts with me here! Thank you – always! ♥️📚
I truly enjoyed this book. I love the way Nadine stood her ground.
Thank you dear Sheila! Your sweet comments keep me inspired!
I really enjoyed this book and hope to read some more of your books. I liked how she brought him courage. I enjoyed the extended epilogue.
Thank you kindly for your support and feedback, Frances! I am glad you enjoyed it!
I am an animal lover and finally someone has written a love story and was able to incorporate their love for animals into a beautiful love story! You didn’t just add animals in but you added how even the animals had great relationships! I would love to see more stories with animals and even see more about Ezra and Nadine’s lives and hopefully have many more children!!! Thanks for the great story!!!
Thank you so much for your kind words, Brenda! I’m thrilled that you appreciated the way animals were woven into the love story. It’s wonderful to hear that their relationships resonated with you as much as the human ones! I’ll definitely keep in mind your request for more stories that include animals and the possibility of exploring Ezra and Nadine’s growing family in the future. Your feedback truly means a lot—thank you for reading!
What a most amazingly beautiful story! Loved every page of this book!
Thank you Ms Colyer!
I should be the one thanking you for all the unconditional support, Judette! I am so glad you enjoyed the story as much!
I enjoyed your book all of it and look forward to reading more. Thank you so
I’m so glad you enjoyed the book, and I truly appreciate your support, Maureen. I can’t wait for you to read more!
First I have a question, is his name Azra it is here in the extended epilogue, or Ezra as it is in most of the original book? The part of the story I like best is how Nadine refuses to not have Azra be in her life as her husband and for her to know everything about running the ranch so she can be a part of everything and be able to take care of everything should she need to.
Thank you for your question and for pointing out the inconsistency, dear Kay! His name is indeed Ezra, and I apologize for the error in the extended epilogue, I will fix this immediately. I’m glad you enjoyed the story, especially Nadine’s determination to be fully involved in their life together. Your feedback is much appreciated!
Carol, thank you for the loving, caring characters you bring forth. I love the tender feeling they imply and also I so very much appreciate the goodness in your stories. No foul language or worries of stumbling across any in you stories. Many of books of this day has the Lords name taken in vain. Which I hate. When I read them, it’s upsetting when I read 3 chapters then find filthy or graphic language is used that ruins the whole story. Then I delete them. I am so thankful I don’t have to wonder when reading your books. Please continue writing your amazing, loving and caring stories. I will always be a faithful fan and will continue reading your books. Once again THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for your heartfelt message, Carla! I’m truly grateful for your kind words and for being such a loyal reader. It’s important to me to create stories that are both uplifting and enjoyable without including language or content that might upset my readers. Your support and appreciation mean the world to me, and I’m thrilled that my stories resonate with you. I’ll continue writing with the same care and consideration. Thank you for being a faithful fan—I look forward to sharing more stories with you!
Wonderful story that keeps one guessing who the reprobate is until the end. Byron Jameson hinted about moving to Montana near end of main story? Nadine is strong woman she knew Ezra was a good man while the town fell into rumors to accuse him. Nice to see Sheriff Leon Sawyer has their forgiveness after all the years of false accusations that Ezra suffered through.
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback, Virginia! I’m glad you enjoyed the twists and turns of the story and that it kept you guessing until the end. I’m pleased that Nadine’s strength and unwavering belief in Ezra resonated with you—she truly is a remarkable character. Your insights are much appreciated, and I’m glad the story made an impact!
What a brilliant story with wonderful characters. A sad tale of ultimate betrayal of the worst kind.
absolutely loved it
Thank you kindly for your support and feedback, Carol! I am glad you enjoyed it!

I enjoyed reading the beautiful story you wrote amazing the best I have read in a long while Thank you for your wonderful story
Thank you for your heartwarming comment, Agatha! I am overjoyed the story resonated so much with you! 🥰
What a great story. I enjoyed every minute of it. Ezra and Nadine certainly had their trials but they were able to overcome them. Nadine was certainly a determined young woman and a great judge of character. Ezra certainly had quite a few burdens to bear along with so much hostility from the towns people. Thankfully the truth finally came out. They were blessed to experience true love and devotion which enabled them to form a family filled with love.
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback, Shannon! I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed the story and connected with Ezra and Nadine’s journey. Their trials and determination, along with the love they found, truly shaped their story. It’s wonderful to know you appreciated how they overcame the obstacles and were blessed with a loving family. Your kind words mean so much—thank you for sharing them!
Beautiful love of families
Thank you, Verla!
I live in Phoenix, AZ. As I read my eyes stumbled over a statement so strange I was stopped dead. She lived in Phoenix but her father only let her have an Orange as a special Holiday treat? Why didn’t she just get a few from the side yard or the sidewalk? Granted it would be a treat in Detroit, Chicago or other northern cities as cherries would be in Phoenix where every other tree is a citrus.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Barb! I can see how the availability of oranges in Phoenix might make that detail seem unusual. Yet, sometimes the way certain elements are framed is intended to highlight something beyond just the geographical setting. I appreciate you pointing that out and I’m so grateful for your engagement with it. Thanks again for reading!
This is a wonderful story so glad that Nadine saw the real Ezra and he found love and acceptance Glad they were able to forgive the sheriff Well written and enjoyable read
I’m so glad you enjoyed Ezra and Nadine’s journey, Gwen. Their story of love and forgiveness really warmed my heart, too!💖
